Matching the subject to the material

The same dragon file behaves very differently depending on what it lands on, and most disappointing mythology projects are a material mismatch rather than a machine problem.

Slate deserves its own warning, because it is the one surface that inverts the design. A file drawn so the engraved areas are the shadows will produce a creature made of light on stone, which sometimes looks spectacular and sometimes looks like a photographic negative. Design craft: what these files demand

Mythology designs are the most detail-dense category we make, and the detail sets real constraints.

• Give detail room. A dragon with full scale texture needs surface area. On a 2-inch keychain the scales merge into noise; the same file at 10 inches is the best thing on your table. Every pack includes bolder silhouette variants for exactly the small-format jobs.
• Dark materials amplify drama. Slate, walnut, and deep-colored acrylic suit the subject. A Medusa on pale pine reads oddly cheerful.

• Pair with text carefully. A short Greek phrase or a character name adds meaning; a paragraph of lore does not. One line, wide letter spacing, under the image.

Sizes that actually hold up

Detail density is the constraint that catches people out. The bands below are design-side starting points drawn from how these files are built, not measurements from a machine: we make the artwork, we do not run production lasers. Treat them as where to begin, then cut one on your own material and adjust, since species, thickness, and machine all move the line.

Cutting has a tighter limit than engraving. A design that engraves happily at three inches may fall apart cut from wood at the same size, because engraved lines can be hair-thin while cut bridges cannot. When a fantasy design is going through a cutter rather than an engraver, look for one where the connecting bridges are drawn as deliberate shapes rather than accidental leftovers.

Why relief medallions are a different animal

A relief-style drawing and a CNC relief file are different things. These medallion SVGs describe flat artwork: drawn shadows and detail suggest volume. A true relief model or height map describes the surface height that CAM uses for a 3D toolpath. Do not treat the shading in a preview image as verified depth data. Intricate medallion linework is also a poor choice for a small vinyl cut.
