How to Engrave on Slate: Tips, Settings, and Design Ideas

March 7, 2026PrintCutCarve Team7 min read

Slate is one of the most rewarding materials for laser engraving. The natural dark surface turns white or light gray when engraved, producing striking high-contrast designs that look professional and feel premium. From coasters to full wall plaques, slate engraving is a skill worth learning.

Why Slate Works So Well for Laser Engraving

When a laser hits slate, it fractures the surface layer of stone, exposing the lighter mineral underneath. This produces a permanent, high-contrast white mark on the dark background — no paint, ink, or coating needed. The result is essentially etched into the stone and will last indefinitely.

Choosing the Right Slate

Not all slate is the same. Quality varies significantly between sources, and this directly affects your engraving results.

Recommended Settings

These are starting points for a typical 10W diode laser. Adjust based on your specific machine and slate.

Setting Value Notes
Speed 3000-5000 mm/min Slower for deeper, more visible engravings
Power 70-90% Slate needs relatively high power
DPI / LPI 254 (0.1mm interval) Higher DPI for detailed designs
Passes 1-2 Multiple light passes prevent chipping
Air Assist Off or very low High air pressure can blow slate dust onto clean areas

For CO2 lasers (40W+), you'll typically use much faster speeds (up to 400 mm/s) at moderate power (40-60%). The higher wattage makes the process much faster.

Preparing Slate for Engraving

  1. Clean the surface — Wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris. Let it dry completely.
  2. Level the surface — Slate pieces often aren't perfectly flat. Use shimming material or a honeycomb bed to support the piece level with the focal point.
  3. Focus carefully — The natural texture of slate means the surface height varies slightly. Focus on the highest point of the engraving area for the sharpest results.

Design Tips for Slate

Bold Designs Work Best

Very fine details can get lost in slate's natural texture. Designs with strong silhouettes and clear shapes produce the most impressive results. Animal silhouettes, bold typography, and nature scenes are all excellent choices.

Consider the Contrast Direction

Since engraving on slate produces light marks on a dark background, your design appears as a reverse. What's black in your SVG file will appear white on the slate. Most silhouette designs from our design collections work perfectly — the filled areas become the engraved light portions.

Add Breathing Room

Don't crowd the design to the edges of the slate piece. Leave at least half an inch of margin around the design. This frames the engraving and looks more professional.

Project Ideas for Slate Engraving

Coasters

Slate coasters (typically 4" square) are a best-seller for craft businesses. Animal designs, monograms, and nature scenes are the most popular. You can buy blank slate coasters with foam backing from craft suppliers. A set of four engraved coasters makes an excellent gift.

Serving Boards and Cheese Boards

Larger slate pieces (8" x 12" or bigger) make gorgeous serving boards. Engrave a family name, farm animal design, or wine-and-cheese themed graphic. Pair with a wood and slate combination board for a premium look.

Signs and Plaques

Slate plaques work for everything from address signs to memorial markers. The permanence of stone engraving makes it ideal for pieces meant to last decades.

Picture Frame Inserts

Small slate tiles engraved with portraits, pet designs, or commemorative text can be mounted in standard picture frames for unique wall art.
